Emergent leaders know that the most important function of their job is to connect with people on a personal level. Think about the leaders you respect, don’t they do this? We forget about what people say to us, but we remember how they made us feel when they said it. Emergent leaders build trust one conversation at a time. They put down the spreadsheet and ask “how are you doing?” Even though these conversations get “off-task” and often seem to be a “time waster”, they are invaluable. People do not care about what you know, until they know how much you care. Taking the time to show someone else you care about what they care about, in a way that is meaningful to them creates trust. This can be difficult and messy, but once that kind of trust is established then they will follow you even if they are unsure or disagree with the direction you are taking them.
